Aquamarine is a type of beryl, a mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system. It is formed in pegmatites, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Aquamarine is a hard gemstone, measuring between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It is found in many places around the world, including Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Madagascar, Namibia, Zambia and the United States. In ancient times, aquamarine was believed to have properties that could protect sailors on the high seas. It is the traditional birthstone for March and the gemstone for the 19th wedding anniversary. Aquamarine is usually cut as a brilliant cut or an emerald cut. Aquamarine can be heat-treated to produce a blue-green or a green color. The name aquamarine comes from the Latin “aqua marina”, which means “sea water”. Aquamarine is sometimes referred to as the “Stone of Courage”, as it is said to give courage to those who wear it.
