Mexican Fire Opal is a variety of opal found in Mexico, especially in the Mexican states of Querétaro and Hidalgo. It is a hydrated amorphous form of silica, containing up to 20% water. Mexican Fire Opal's colour ranges from red to yellow, with an orange-red being the most common. It is believed to bring strength, courage and creativity to its wearer. Mexican Fire Opal has a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. It has been found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Mexican Fire Opal was discovered in Mexico in the 1800’s. It is a popular gemstone for jewelry, including pendants and earrings. Mexican Fire Opal is sometimes referred to as "Cherry Opal". It is believed to be emotionally calming and bring feelings of love and peace.
